Junior Curriculum
Overview
The junior curriculum at Waitaki Girls’ High School provides students with a broad and balanced education across a range of learning areas.
Students in Years 9 and 10 are supported to develop essential skills, build confidence, and establish strong foundations for their future learning pathways.
Year 9
Year 9 Curriculum
Year 9 students study across eight key learning areas:
- English
- Science
- Mathematics
- Social Science
- Physical Education and Health
- The Arts (Art, Music, Drama, Dance)
- Technology (Digital, Food and Nutrition and Textiles)
- Languages (Te Reo Māori, Japanese, Pacific Languages)
This broad curriculum allows students to explore different subjects, discover their interests, and develop core skills in literacy, numeracy and critical thinking.
Year 10
Year 10 Curriculum
In Year 10, students continue to build on their core learning while beginning to personalise their programme.
All students study:
- English
- Science
- Mathematics
- Social Studies
- Physical Education and Health
In addition, students select two option subjects from areas such as:
- The Arts
- Agriculture
- Languages
- Technology
Informed choices
Supporting Student Pathways
The junior curriculum is designed to support students in making informed choices about their future learning.
- Some subjects, such as languages, require continued study to progress into senior levels
- Students may be guided into courses that best support their learning needs
- Where courses are oversubscribed, placement may be based on prior performance

Through the junior years, students develop:

These skills prepare students for success in senior study and NCEA qualifications.
