Theatrical types can join the ever-growing Drama Club, which is now fifty-students strong. The Drama Club is separated into Junior and Senior although there are some projects in which the students work together. Both Senior and Junior Drama Club present one production per year and they are responsible for the acting as well as the back-stage crewing to give the students the opportunity to learn all the roles involved in theatre. Every second year the students can opt to take part in the Waitaki combined -schools’ production.
Waitaki Girls’ boasts a number of co-curricular musical groups - Chamber Music, the Choir, Orchestra, the combined schools’ Youth Orchestra, Kapa Haka, Pasifika and the bi-annual School Production. The students are encouraged to develop their performance skills by participating in local and national competitions, and performing to our very appreciative North Otago community at every opportunity.
Itinerant Music Programme
Students can learn an instrument through the Itinerant Music Program. If a student intends to learn Music in Year 11 as an option then learning an instrument is a compulsory measure to ensure that the student achieves well in NCEA. Presently we offer itinerant Music teachers of Drums, Guitar, Violin, Clarinet, Cello, Double-Bass, and singing during and outside school hours. We have dedicated visiting teachers from the Timaru area as well as local Oamaru teachers which are contracted individually with the teacher. We have an excellent music suite, complete with the technology to support composition work, and plenty of rehearsal space. To find out more about music at Waitaki Girls’, please contact our Music Department.
